Irshalgad is a fort in the Karjat division.  Karjat, Malanggad, Prabalgad are all forts in Konkan.  While passing through Kalyan-Pune railway line, Malanggad, Devnicha Sulka, Matheran, Peb, Mhaismal, Prabalgad, Ershalgad attract everyone's attention.  Life in the area is normal. Due to abundant rainfall, paddy is widely cultivated everywhere.  Being close to the fort from the highway, it is easy to reach the foothills by vehicle.

History: 

It is wrong to call Ershal a fort, because Ershal is a cone.  Therefore, it is not mentioned anywhere in the history. Considering the existence of water tanks on the fort, it seems that it must have been used for surveillance.  This fort must have come under the control of the Marathas in May 1666 when Shivaraya took the entire route up to Kalyan, Bhiwandi Rayari.  Ershal is the neighbor of Prabalgad.  On 23rd January 1972, a tragic incident took place on this cone, which was the tragic end of Kumar Prakash Durve who fell from the fort.  Mountaineers from Mumbai and Thane gather here on January 26 every year in his memory.

Places to see: 

Ershalgad is a cone.  On the way to the fort from Ershal Machi, we reach the edge of the fort by taking a simple rock climb from the water tank on the way.  At present, due to the installation of a ladder, one can reach Nedha without climbing a rock. Before climbing the ladder, one can see the idol of Goddess Vishala on the left.  Going a little higher from Nedha, there is a pool of water on the left and a kapar on the side.  It is suitable for drinking water.  It is important to be aware of the technique of climbing to reach the cone.  Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi, Malanggad, Karnala, Manikgad can be seen from Gadmatha.

How to reach: 

You can reach Khopoli by train from Mumbai.  From Khopoli to S.T.  Or by 6 seater rickshaw to reach the square above 20 km.  It takes half an hour to reach the base of Ershalgad from Chowk.  It takes an hour and a half to reach Gadmatha from the foothills via Ershalwadi.

Accommodation: 

There is no accommodation on the fort.  But it can be convenient to stay in a school in Ershalwadi.

Meals: 

Since there is no dining facility at the fort, you should do it yourself.

Water supply: 

There is water in the tank on the fort till March.

Travel time: 

It takes one hour to reach Ershalwadi. Best time to visit: The fort can be reached in all seasons except monsoon.  Must be accompanied by 100 foot saplings and other climbing equipment.

 It is okay to go to the fort other than rainy season.

ईरशाळगड हा कर्जत विभागात येणारा किल्ला आहे.गडावरील विशाळादेवीच्या नावाचा अपभ्रंश होऊन या गडाचे नाव ईरशाळगड झाले असावे. कर्जत, मलंगगड, प्रबळगड हे सर्व कोकणात येणारे किल्ले आहेत. कल्याण - पुणे लोहमार्गावरून जातांना मलंगगड, देवणीचा सुळका, माथेरान, पेब, म्हैसमाळ, प्रबळगड, ईरशाळगड हा परिसर सर्वांचेच लक्ष वेधून घेतो. या परिसरातील जनजीवन तसे सर्वसामान्यच आहे पावसाचे प्रमाण मुबलक असल्यामुळे सर्वत्र भाताची शेती फार मोठ्या प्रमाणावर होते. महामार्गापासून गड जवळच असल्याने पायथ्याच्या गावापर्यंत वाहनाने जाण्याची सोय होते. 

इतिहास :

ईरशाळला गड म्हणणे अयोग्य आहे, कारण ईरशाळ हा एक सुळका आहे. त्यामुळे इतिहासात त्याचा कुठे उल्लेख नाही.गडावरील पाण्याच्या टाक्यांचे अत्सित्व पाहाता याचा उपयोग टेहळणीसाठी केला गेला असावा असे वाटते. मे १६६६ मध्ये शिवरायांनी कल्याण, भिवंडी रायरी पर्यंतचा सारा मुलूख घेतला तेव्हा हा गडदेखील मराठ्यांच्या ताब्यात आला असावा. ईरशाळ म्हणजे प्रबळगडचा सख्खा शेजारी. २३ जानेवारी १९७२ रोजी याच सुळक्यावर एक दु…:खद घटना घडली ती म्हणजे, कुमार प्रकाश दुर्वे याचा किल्ल्यावरून पडून दु…:खद अंत झाला. त्याच्या स्मरणार्थ दरवर्षी २६ जानेवारीला मुंबई - ठाण्याचे गिर्यारोहक येथे जमतात.

पहाण्याची ठिकाणे :

ईरशाळगड म्हणजे एक सुळकाच आहे. ईरशाळ माची पासून गडावर जातांना, वाटेतच पाण्याचे एक टाकं लागत तेथून पुढे सोपे असे प्रस्तरारोहण करून आपण गडाच्या नेढ्यात पोहोचतो. सध्या येथे शिडी बसविल्यामुळे प्रस्तरारोहण न करता सुध्दा नेढ्यापर्यंत जाता येते.शिडी चढण्यापूर्वी डावीकडे विशाळा देवीची मूर्ती पाहायला मिळते. नेढ्यापासून थोडे वर गेल्यावर, डावीकडे पाण्याचे एक टाकं लागत व बाजूलाच एक कपार आहे. हे पाणी पिण्यास योग्य आहे, नेढ्यातून समोर चढणारी वाट सुळक्यावर जाते. सुळक्यावर जाण्यासाठी प्रस्तारारोहणाचे तंत्र अवगत असणे आवश्यकच आहे. गडमाथ्यावरून समोरच प्रबळगड, माथेरान, चंदेरी, मलंगगड, कर्नाळा, माणिकगड हा परिसर दिसतो.

पोहोचण्याच्या वाटा :

मुंबईहून रेल्वेने खोपोली गाठावी. खोपोलीहून एस.टी. किंवा ६ आसनी रिक्षाने २० कि.मी.वरील चौक गाठावे. चौकहून ईरशाळगडाचा पायथा गाठण्यास अर्धा तास लागतो. पायथ्या पासून ईरशाळवाडी मार्गे गडमाथा गाठण्यास दिड तास लागतो.

राहाण्याची सोय :

किल्ल्यावर राहण्याची सोय नाही. पण ईरशाळवाडीतील शाळेत राहण्याची सोय होऊ शकते.

जेवणाची सोय :

किल्ल्यावर जेवणाची सोय नसल्याने ती आपण स्वत:च करावी.

पाण्याची सोय :

मार्च पर्यंत गडावरील टाक्यात पाणी असते.

जाण्यासाठी लागणारा वेळ :

ईरशाळवाडीतून एक तास लागतो.

जाण्यासाठी उत्तम कालावधी :

पावसाळा सोडून इतर सर्व ऋतुत गडावर जाता येते.

सूचना :

गडमाथा गाठण्यास प्रस्तरारोहणाचे तंत्र अवगत असणे आवश्यक आहे. १०० फूटी रोप व इतर गिर्यारोहणाचे सामान सोबत असणे आवश्यक आहे. पावसाळा सोडून इतर वेळी गडावर जाण्यास हरकत नाही.
