The original name of this fort "Peb" may have been derived from the goddess Pebi. There is a clear historical reference to the fort of Peb that the cave on the fort was used by Shivaji Maharaj for granaries.
Places to see:
After climbing the fort of Peb via Neral or Panvel, you see a huge cave on the left. The cave can accommodate about 100 people. On either side of this cave are square-faced caves. You can crawl into these caves. One of these caves has a small room at the bottom that can accommodate one person. There are similar caves at the top of the large caves. Inside the last cave, there is water at the end. (A flashlight is required to enter all the caves except the pearl cave.)
After seeing this cave, you can see the remains of the fortified wall. There is a ladder to climb it. When you go down the ladder without going up, you can see 2 water holes dug in the rock. When you come near the ladder again and climb the ladder, there is a water hole dug in the rock on the right hand side. Next to it is the idol of Hanuman. After climbing up from here and turning to the right hand, there are the remains of Vastu. From there onwards we reach near Datta Mandir / Ashram. Waiting to reach the highest point of the fort along this temple. There is a ladder on this path. After climbing this ladder, we reach the highest point of the fort. Here are Datta's shoes. The river Neral and Ulhas to the east, Gadeshwar Lake, Panvel, Uran to the west, Mahesmal, Chanderi, Tahuli mountain ranges to the north and the peaks of Malanggad in the distance. To the south is the hill of Matheran and Prabalgad.
After visiting Padukone, come back to Datta Mandir and go to the south end of the fort. There is only one tower on the fort. Coming to the fort via Matheran, you come under this bastion. After seeing the bastion, come back near Datta Mandir and go to the lower side. Next to these hills is the temple of Lord Mahadev. The idol of Goddess Pebi is carved on the wall of the temple. There is a cool water tank on the side of the temple. The image of Yaksha is carved on the wall of this tank. This is where your burial ends. From here you can reach Neral or Panvel by descending the fort or you can reach Neral by reaching Matheran-Neral road by taking the lower path of Buruja.
How to reach:
1) By Neral: -
Get off at Neral station on the Central Railway to reach Peb. After landing at Neral station, you can see Matheran in front and Peb's fort next to it. When you come out of the station, do not go towards Matheran but wait on the right side (towards Mumbai). On the way to the hill, we reach Katkarwadi in 15 minutes, first by the bridge over the stream, then by the field, poultry farm. Leave the main road here and walk towards the electric tower in front. When you come to a tower with a big cement foundation, you go a little further and there is a big waterfall. Near this waterfall you need 3 parts.
1) Wait next to the waterfall
2) The main pass through
3) Wait adjacent to the towers
The main path between these three paths is the real path leading to the cave of the fort. The first route leads to the forest but it is impossible to proceed further. The third way is to turn the neck and take the grass. Also, this road is more likely to miss the fork leading to Panvel. In order to catch the path passing through, a stone with a picture of Lord Ganesha comes up. Climb up on the right side of this stone. This is the way to go, even if it is a spring, you should not leave this way and walk towards the gorge in the same way. In this gorge one can get a way from Panvel. Once you reach the gorge, turn left and proceed. From there a white stone appears. The white stone is difficult to climb, but after crossing it, a cave is found a short distance away. It is beneficial for first time visitors. It takes two to three hours to climb the fort.
2) Via Matheran - Neral Road: -
There is a "water pipe" station on the Matheran-Neral road and railway line. After this station, where the railway line crosses the road, there is a sign saying "Peb (Vikatgad) / Prati Girnar". It can be reached by ST or private vehicle. As soon as you start walking by train from this place, you will see "Matheran's Panorama Point" at the top of the left hand side. Taking a detour, the railway line reaches a gorge. After crossing this gorge, Peb fort can be seen on the right side. After walking a short distance, an iron saffron arch can be seen on the right side. It takes about an hour to reach the arch from the road. There are steps to descend from the arch. After descending these steps, the first step is taken. After descending the ladder, the hill of Peb and Matheran falls in the gorge between the hills. The only tower on the fort is visible from here. Next to the second staircase is a ledge in the cliff wall. After climbing this ladder, we reach the water bodies near the temple of Lord Shiva. It takes 1.30 to 2 hours to reach the fort by this route.
Accommodation:
The fort can accommodate 50 people in a cave. But rats suffer a lot here at night.

Meals should be arranged by yourself.
Water facilities:
1) It is suitable to drink water from the water tank near the ladder near the big cave.
2) There is a cold water tank on the side of Mahadev temple.
Travel time:
1) It takes 3 hours from Neral via footpath.
2) Matheran - Neral road takes 1.30 to 2 hours.

पनवेलच्या ईशान्येला, मुंबई - पुणे मार्गावरील नेरळपासून पश्चिमेला तीन - चार किलोमीटर अंतरावर पेबचा किल्ला (विकटगड) आहे. गडाखालच्या पेबी देवी वरून या किल्ल्याचे नाव पेब ठेवण्यात आलेले असावे. माथेरान सारख्या सुंदर थंड हवेच्या ठिकाणा जवळ, पण माणसांच्या गर्दीपासून दूर असलेला पेबचा किल्ला एका दिवसाच्या ट्रेकसाठी आदर्श जागा आहे. किल्ला चढण्यासाठी लागणारा वेळ ,चढण्याची वाट, वरील गुहेची रचना, गुहेसमोरील निसर्गरम्य दृश्य अशा अनेक बाबतीत हा गड अजोड आहे. पेबच्या किल्ल्याचे विकटगड असे देखील नाव आहे. किल्ल्यावर जाण्यासाठी नेरळ, माथेरान, पनवेल या तिनही ठिकाणांहून वाटा आहेत.
इतिहास: या किल्ल्याचे मूळ नाव "पेब" हे नाव पेबी देवीवरून पडले असावे. किल्ल्यावरील गुहेचा शिवाजी महाराजांनी धान्य कोठारांसाठी उपयोग केला होता, असा स्पष्ट ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ पेबच्या किल्ल्याबाबत आढळतो. पहाण्याची ठिकाणे : | |
| पेबचा किल्ला नेरळ किंवा पनवेल मार्गे चढून आल्यावर आपल्याला डाव्या बाजूला एक प्रचंड गुहा दिसते. या गुहेत साधारणत: १०० जण राहु शकतात. या गुहेच्या बाजूला चौकोनी तोंड असलेल्या गुहा आहेत. या गुहांमध्ये रांगत जाता येते. यातील एका गुहेत खालच्या बाजूला एक माणूस बसू शकेल इतकी छोटी खोली आहे. मोठ्या गुहेच्या वरच्या बाजूस सुध्दा अशाच प्रकारच्या गुहा आहेत. त्यापैकी शेवटच्या गुहेच्या आत टोकाला पाण्याच टाक आहे. ( मोती गुहा सोडून इतर सर्व गुहांमध्ये जाण्यासाठी विजेरी आवश्यकता आहे.) या गुहा पाहून पुढे गेल्यावर तटबंदीच्या भिंतीचे अवशेष दिसतात. त्यावर चढून जाण्यासाठी एक शिडी आहे. या शिडीवर न चढता खालच्या बाजूस गेल्यावर कातळात खोदलेली २ पाण्याची टाक पाहायला मिळतात.पुन्हा शिडीजवळ येऊन शिडी चढून गेल्यावर उजव्या हाताला पाण्याचे कातळात खोदलेले टाक आहे. त्याच्या बाजूलाच हनुमानाची मुर्ती आहे. येथून वर चढून उजव्या हाताला वळल्यावर वास्तुंचे अवशेष आहेत. तिथून पुढे गेल्यावर आपण दत्तमंदिरा/ आश्रमा जवळ पोहोचतो. या मंदिराच्या बाजूने किल्ल्याच्या सर्वोच्च टोकावर जाण्याची वाट आहे. या वाटेवर एक शिडी आहे. ही शिडी चढून गेल्यावर आपण किल्ल्याच्या सर्वोच्च टोकावर पोहोचतो. येथे दत्ताच्या पादुका आहेत. येथून पूर्वेकडे नेरळ व उल्हास नदी , पश्चिमेकडे गाडेश्वर तलाव, पनवेल, उरण, उत्तरेकडे म्हैसमाळ ,चंदेरी, ताहूली ही डोंगररांग व दूरवर मलंगगडाचे सुळके दिसतात. दक्षिणेकडे माथेरनचा डोंगर व प्रबळगड दिसतो. पादुकांचे दर्शन घेऊन परत दत्तमंदिरा जवळ येऊन गडाच्या दक्षिण टोकाकडे जावे. येथे गडावरील एकमेव बुरुज आहे. माथेरान मार्गे गडावर येतांना आपण या बुरुजा खालून येते. बुरुज पाहून परत दत्तमंदिरा जवळ येउन खालच्या बाजूला गेल्यावर कड्याजवळ २ पाण्याच्या कोरडी टाकं आहेत. या टाक्र्यांच्या पुढे महादेवाचे मंदिर आहे. मंदिराच्या भिंतीवर पेबी देवीची मुर्ती कोरलेली आहे. मंदिराच्या बाजूला थंडगार पाण्याचे टाक आहे. या टाक्याच्या भिंतीवर यक्ष प्रतिमा कोरलेली आहे. या ठिकाणी आपली गडफेरी पूर्ण होते. येथून आल्या मार्गाने किल्ला उतरुन नेरळ किंवा पनवेलला जाता येते किंवा बुरुजा खालच्या वाटेने माथेरान - नेरळ रस्त्यावर पोहोचून नेरळला जाता येते. | |
| पोहोचण्याच्या वाटा : | |
| १) नेरळ मार्गे :- पेबला जाण्यासाठी मध्य रेल्वेवरील नेरळ स्टेशनला उतरावे. नेरळ स्टेशनवर उतरल्यावर, समोरच माथेरान आणि त्याच्या बाजूस पेबच्या किल्ल्याचे दर्शन होते. स्टेशनच्या बाहेर आल्यावर माथेरानच्या दिशेला न जाता उजवीकडची (मुंबईच्या दिशेची ) वाट पकडावी. या वाटेने डोंगराच्या दिशेने जाताना प्रथम ओढ्यावरील पुल, मग मैदान, पोल्ट्रीफार्म या मार्गे आपण १५ मिनीटात कातकरवाडीत पोहोचतो. येथे मुख्य रस्ता सोडून समोर दिसणार्या इलेक्ट्रीकच्या टॉवरच्या दिशेने मार्गक्रमण करावे. सिमेंटचा एक मोठा पाया असलेला टॉवर आल्यावर तेथून थोडे पुढे गेल्यावर एक मोठा धबधबा लागतो. या धबधब्याजवळ आपल्याला ३ वाटा लागतात. १) धबधब्याला लागून असलेली वाट २) मधून गेलेली मुख्य वाट ३) टॉवर्सला लागून असलेली वाट या तीन वाटांपैकी मधली मुख्य वाट हीच किल्ल्याच्या गुहेपर्यंत नेणारी खरी वाट आहे. पहिल्या वाटेने पुढे गेल्यास जंगल लागते पण पुढे या वाटेने जाणे अशक्य आहे. तिसरी वाट म्हणजे मानेला वळसा घालून घास घेण्यासारखा प्रकार होय. तसेच या वाटेला पनवेलकडे जाणारे फाटे फुटत असल्याने वाट चुकण्याची शक्यता जास्त आहे. मधून जाणारी वाट पकडावी या वाटेने गणपतीचे चित्र काढलेला दगड येतो या दगडाच्या उजव्या बाजूने वर चढावे. हीच वाट पुढे झर्या,ची होत असली तरी, ही वाट न सोडता याच वाटेने खिंडीच्या दिशेने वाटचाल करावी. या खिंडीत पनवेलहून येणारी वाट येउन मिळते. खिंडीत पोहोचल्यावर तेथून डाव्या हाताला वळून पुढे जावे. तेथून पुढे पांढरा दगड लागतो. पांढरा दगड चढण्यास कठीण असून तो पार केल्यानंतर मात्र पुढे थोड्याच अंतरावर गुहा लागते. प्रथमच जाणार्र्यांनी वाटाडया घेणे हितकारक आहे. किल्ला चढण्यास दोन ते तीन तास लागतात. २) माथेरान - नेरळ रस्ता मार्गे :- माथेरान - नेरळ रस्त्यावर आणि रेल्वे मार्गावर " वाटर पाईप " स्टेशन आहे. या स्टेशन नंतर रेल्वे लाईन रस्त्याला जिथे आडवी जाते, तिथे " पेब (विकटगड) / प्रती गिरनार " ला जाण्याचा मार्ग असा बोर्ड लावलेला आहे. येथ पर्यंत एसटी किंवा खाजगी वाहनाने पोहोचता येते. या ठिकाणाहून रेल्वे मार्गाने चालायला सूरुवात केल्यावर थोड्याच वेळात डाव्या हाताला वरच्या बाजूस " माथेरानचा पॆनोरमा पाँईंट" दिसायला लागतो. पुढे वळसा घेऊन रेल्वे लाईन एका खिंडीत पोहोचते. ही खिंड पार केल्यावर उजव्या बाजूस पेब किल्ला दिसतो.थोडे अंतर चालल्यावर उजव्या बाजूला लोखंडाची भगव्या रंगाची कमान दिसते. रस्त्यापासून कमानी पर्यंत पोहोचण्यास पाऊण तास लागतो. कमानीतून खाली उतरण्याकरीता पायर्या आहेत. या पायर्या उतरल्यावर पहीली शिडी लागते. शिडी उतरल्यावर वाट डोंगराच्या कडेकडेने पेब व माथेरानचा डोंगर र्यांच्या मधील खिंडीत येते. येथून समोर गडावरील एकमेव बुरुज दिसतो. पुढे दुसर्या शिडी जवळ कातळभिंतीत एक नेढ आहे. ही शिडी चढल्यावर आपण महादेवाचे मंदिराजवळील पाण्याच्या टाक्र्यांपाशी पोहोचतो. या मार्गाने किल्ल्यावर पोहोचण्यास १.३० ते २ तास लागतात. | |
